The fire, at the Alto Fairfield Metro Complex on Kings Highway, in Fairfield, began around 9:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, the Fairfield Fire Department said.
Fighterfightes received word that the fire started on the roof-top deck and arrived on the scene within four minutes, the department said.
First arriving units found smoke showing from the top of the roofline and the fire alarm system sounding. The residents were evacuating the building because of an activated pull station by a quick-acting resident, said Fire Chief Denis McCarthy.
As additional fire department units arrived on the scene they found toxic smoke emanating from the sixth-floor deck of the residential structure.
Engine Two under the command of Lieutenant Kevin Polcer directed firefighting rooftop operations. The fire was deep-seated and hidden inside of a decorative fireplace surround.
All of the 23 on-duty firefighters and required additional units to respond to the scene from the Bridgeport Fire Department to assist bringing a total of 33 firefighters.
Bridgeport, Westport, and Easton fire departments also responded to protect the remaining Town’s fire stations while this incident progressed.
Firefighting companies deployed tarps to contain the water damage and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Water damaged occurred in approximately nine residential units. Five of those units required occupants to relocate for the night, the chief said.
Fairfield’s Building Department and Fire Prevention Division will be conducting the origin and cause investigation.
There were no injuries.
